I was one of three cofounders of Activision Blizzard Media's in-house design agency working with brands to craft ad micro-experiences across our catalog of games. We knew there was an opportunity to generate additional revenue as brands began dipping their toes into ad spend in gaming. We formed Creative Lab to work specifically with these brands and got executive sign-off on launching a pilot for the venture.
With a team of four people total, we designed a catalog of ad microexperiences that could be templatized and sold to multiple brands. These were a mixture of rich media ad formats with varying interactive experiences to full playable gamified ad experience designed and built in Unity. The in-house agency venture took off significantly and our bootstrapped team hit our annual goal in six months. We hit around $6M in annual revenue in our pilot year and designed new, immersive experiences that led to highly-performant campaigns for many brands in our games.
